Hello Guys, (Sorry for the Inactivity!)

I need some suggestions for Computer Hardware, Basically Enough I'm doing a lot media production/management, and it's getting big enough so that I need to do work at home. Unfortunately My laptop has been my only computer for years and has worked perfectly. But for my needs it's just not powerful enough.

What I'm looking for is something that can seamlessly handle/multi-task Video/Audio editing, 3-D rendering/Model creation. I'm assuming something with 4+ Gigs of ram, But unsure of what I'll need for a processor and other hardware. It will also need to be able to run Microsoft Xp( or 7) and the newest Mac OS.

I figure I can go buy the newest name brand POS that claims it can do all of these things, but what about Building one from scratch? What would you guys Do/Suggest?

My thanks to any remarks beforehand.

i sadly suggest an i7 build. i7's are quite expensive, but the hyper-threading of intel's processors makes them vastly superior to AMD's standard quad cores for video processes.

I've put together a build for you on newegg, here it is.

Computer Suggestions I7build

the bottleneck is the video card, but its a 1gb w/ high clock speeds so it should be quite sufficient for video editing/rendering.

if you need something under a certain price range, let me know.. it only takes me about 5-10 minutes to make a build on newegg

also: this is without OS's, i'm assuming since you're in school (last i knew of), you'd get a better deal going through the university than newegg for windows7 and osx

Actually, Thats Not bad of a price. Most of the name brand computers I was looking at hardly met these specifications yet cost 2-3x more.

Q1: Do they Build it then send it to you?

Q2: I've Never Installed An OS on a Blank HD before, If I have one (NON CD, Can I Apply It VIA USB?)

Q3: Monitor Suggestions? I'm Assuming non of them really beat the other in quality really.

q4: Would Piecing It together Be difficult If I wanted to purchase these in pieces?

Thanks for you're Response bud! Seriously, Most name brands seem like Crap compared to this deal if it really is what I'm imagining It will be.

1. No, they send you the pieces in their manufacturers' boxes.

2. Windows 7 CAN be installed via USB, I think osx has to be installed via dvd though. HOWEVER, if you're going to be dual booting osx and 7, I strongly suggest doing osx first, and then using the bootcamp program to install windows 7.

3. Well... there's a BIG price difference in high quality lcd's vs low quality ones... and in my
opinion, I'd rather just buy two lower quality ones than 1 high quality one... BUT High resolution CRT's are THE best for picture quality.

4. Not really! I've taught quite a few people how to put computers together and they all remark at how easy it is.

I would buy the name brand (the only brand that can actually do what you're asking of it: Apple; read: run Mac OS), save yourself the trouble. You're going to be working on it not gaming: you'll have the safety of a warranty and Time Machine and a system that's essentially optimized for the tasks you want to perform. Running OS X in a windows machine requires workarounds and it won't be optimized for it.

Apple has turned into a company that manufactured their own everything, to a company selling products in shiny cases with older hardware that has been used in "windows machines" for years..

The closest thing I could find performance wise to the build I made on newegg was a mac pro with 3 gb of ram for $2500.. The video was nearly identical, and the processor was lesser (unsurprising).

There is no real "workaround" nowadays in installing OSX on "regular" parts... Seeing as OSX is now Intel based, it'll run on the i7 flawlessly, should have NO problem recognizing the RAM, and since it's an evga motherboard, I'm sure there are some fixes if he even has one single problem (which I highly doubt).

I'm sorry, I'd rather spend (and highly recommend) an extra hour or two of "googling" versus spending 1-2 thousand dollars more. I guess I'm just a cheap bastard eh?
