I'm here way too much!

First topic message reminder :

If any of you haven't been reading up on what's currently going on in the Playstation scene pertaining to the Playstation 3 console as of now, here's a few things to get you caught up to the basic level.

George Hotz was sued for bypassing the security in his own playstation 3 console that he paid for, and distributing the exploit on the internet. this, in time, kickstarted the ps3 hacking scene, with lawsuits, custom firmwares, jailbreak dongles, DMCA takedowns, and bans everywhere.

as of a few days ago, a group, announcing themselves as "Anonymous" has taken down
Sony.com (now back online though unfortunately) and Playstation.com (still down as of a few hours ago)

More Information found here: http://www.nextgenupdate.com/forums/playstation-3-exploits-hacks/363916-anon-brought-down-sony-com-playstation-com-cause-behind-maintenance.html

announcement:

i, to be honest, fully support what they're doing. Sony has done quite a few things to piss people off, i believe it's time they got a taste of the anger that we (the consumers) feel toward them for the unlawful removal of an advertised feature (OtherOS support), among other feature removals/security failures (the credit card leaks).

Or otherwise known in the adult world as "It's not our fault".

Why do you continually try and demonize Sony? Have they made mistakes? Every company has.... but It's obvious the last problem was due to someone hacking into their infrastructure. They could have just let it go and let hackers get to the credit-card numbers/security numbers.... but they did the best they could to stop it. So no, it's not their fault that some douche bag hacker took it upon himself to hack Sony's security to steal information from..... some of the same people that are bitching about Sony. How exactly does that work?

Do you just bitch about big business expecting a hand out like the rest of the infantile Americans that believe because they spent their "hard earned money" they are entitled to some kind of royal treatment? Shit happens. Sony was "attacked", but yet you still make light of it as they are still the problem. Ignorant, ignorant, ignorant.

Maybe when you grow up a little more, you may understand how the real world works.... and maybe learn to point fingers at the real problems... and not the victims.

It's people like this that blame Clinton for the Vietnam war.

what's wrong with having a high amount of hatred toward corporate greed and expressing it the way Sony makes it look? it's pretty obvious by the fact they took almost four days to tell us they got breached in order to try and dodge a few lawsuits. yet some 38 year old from alabama filed a lawsuit the other day because they took so long to warn us. it's been obvious that all they care about is money ever since the CD rootkit incident back in '05.

Sony KNEW they were breached before the network even went down and failed to warn anyone even then. they the released a statement about a "possible intrusion" and inflated the statement from there. and now they say according to their TOS, they aren't liable for a psn user's private data leak because of a PSN breach. i mean, seriously?

It has emerged that part of Sony’s PSN terms and conditions claim that the company is not liable for any loss of user data!

“We exclude all liability for loss of data or unauthorised access to your data, Sony Online Network account or Sony Online Network wallet and for damage caused to your software or hardware as a result of using or accessing Sony Online Network,” the terms state.

However, speaking to Edge, the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) claims that Sony is accountable to stipulations outlined in the UK Data Protection Act which says that companies are obligated to keep users’ details secure.
“While we are unable to say where the data is being stored at present, if it was in the UK, this clause would not free them from their obligations under the UK Data Protection Act,” ICO stated.
“If we found a breach, one of the actions we could take would be to issue an undertaking, which is an agreement between the ICO and the company that if they are handling personal information they have to bring about set improvements in order for them to be compliant with the act.
“If the company is not compliant with the act within a certain time limit, further action would be taken and we might consider an enforcement notice or issue a monetary penalty.
“For serious breaches of the act, we can issue a monetary penalty up to £500,000.”

that quote contains PROOF that Sony only cares about money. if they cared even a single ounce for the consumers, they would at least have acted faster in telling everybody that their security was compromised.

Rest assured, Sony actually LOSES money by being breached. Tell me 1 thing they could possibly gain from this that supports your claim that they only care about money? Caring about the customer is the ultimate expression of caring about money.

Every single for-profit organization in America cares only about money. It's what gets food in your plate, in all our plates. If this was some other company, say Microsoft, and they were actually able to secure the credit card information, would you be out here praising how much Microsoft cares for you?

But it wasn't Sony who did any type of identity theft. So you are actually blaming the victim of being hacked..... for being hacked? As PF said, Sony stands to loose money from this, so they will pay for having a breach that was exploited..... but what about the person who exploited it? How come they aren't the one on the hot seat?

I'll be completely honest... PS3 users are looking like the biggest crybaby pussies I have ever seen. Blame the company for everything, and even when things happen that's not their doing... blame them anyway.

Sony should just allow these ass-hats to bring the PS3 back, give them their money, and tell them to fuck off. What is one reason the economy is in such shambles? These fuck-wad customers who feel companies owe them something because they bought their product. No one was forced to buy a PS3, deal with it and shut up. I see it time and time again, the new generation of consumers acting like they should own the company because their "My little pony" game lagged 3 times in 6 months or they lost their chance to harvest some crop in a virtual farm. I see this in forums more and more. Complaints from people that feel "they" are more important then everyone else. You aren't.... so SHUT UP! No one cares, you look like idiots, and your voice means nothing. The companies do their best to make money, sometimes they get it right, sometimes they don't. But quit thinking you are somehow important because you spend $400 to buy something that a billion dollar company sold.

Roach, you want to bring up corporate greed... what about asshole customers? I would take companies trying to make money as opposed to elitist pre-madonnas any day.

Ungrateful douches.

there IS a fine line between greedy corporate dickheads and asshole customers... not that i really take a side or anything, i'm simply prodding at the side that's got the spotlight shining brightly on it right now. if there comes a time where the consumers are at fault for something, i'll poke at that as well. it's what a debate topic is all about. debate. debating is fun.

@ the identity theft topic. the information that was stolen from sony's servers is PERSONAL data that Sony should be responsible for paying any damages caused by this breach. and sony's trying to say that they're not liable. tad, tell me in your honest opinion, if that really sounds like sony cares at all if everyone's CC info was stolen. or if it even sounds like it's fair or even legal tbh. Who wasn't secure enough to protect the data? Sony. Who failed to warn anybody that psn was already breached almost two months prior to these events? Guess who, Sony. i'm not saying sony is completely at fault either. they're dealing with a bunch of idiots DDoSing them as well, i can imagine how difficult it must be to pay attention to a bunch of 4chan fags with LOIC, and watch psn security as much as they can. along with all the lawsuits flying across the scene as well. must be chaos for Sony. but the consumers are also at fault as well, for those who deliberately use their computers/ps3's for criminal activity, who can't earn even a single dollar legitimately, and spend their years in their parent's basement because they're too lazy to get of their fat asses and work.

My Solid statements for both ends:

Sony, fix your fucking security, and don't be lazy about it this time.
Consumers, play your games fair, and be careful about using your information on PSN from now on.

on another note, i might end up buying a 360. all my other friends have done so already.
after much thought, an annual payment of 60 bucks isnt so bad. compared to horrible customer support with sony, it's like taking an elevator from hell, straight to heaven.

All customer support for everything is absolute shit, I have yet to hear one case about anyone calling customer support and being satisfied with it.

And on the topic of "greedy corporations," a corporations purpose in its existence is to do what? Make money, how does it do that? Makes a product to sell, mass produces it, and puts it in Wal-Mart.

From what I've read in this topic, is that your PS3 isn't living up to your expectations in some way, and you're on a rampage cuz you can't accept that it's a console that you chose to waste the money on. And, since it was a choice made by you, why complain about it? That's like me buying a Corvette and have higher expectations for its gas mileage than it can reach, and then me going on a rant against GM because of it, see how that works Roach?

To be fair, though, Sony did remove some functions that my PS3 had when I bought it; you can see the point the pissed off users are trying to make, but the agreement I read and accepted was something like this: "If you want to play online you must update to the newer version, this will remove the OtherOS capabilities. Do you agree?" I clicked yes, because that's the agreement I entered the first time I logged into PSN.

The complainers, however, do not see it that way. They take it as a personal attack from Sony to consumers, because Sony is evil.

Roachleader

Roachleader
I'm here way too much!

porn, that isnt quite entirely true, they don't see it as "they removed it because they're evil"

it's "they removed it without any warning noted anywhere that they could remove a major advertised feature"

data, i had an xbox before, and i called live support, sure they had their issues, but they were much more helpful than being on hold for an hour and a half then getting d/ced. my stepdad called Sony because his Ps3 wouldn't boot up at all, flashing yellow light. he was on hold for close to two hours before they finally patched him to a technician, they hung up on him after he asked about warranty coverage. at least xbox support gave me details on what i could do. i had RRoD from a hardware failure.

it's obvious that both sides have their ups/downs, but it's pretty clear sony could definately do a better job of handling things.

also, @tad and data, i don't mean to sound like a raging douchebag when i post against sony, but it just pisses me off sometimes how they can be so stupid.

But they didn't entirely remove it: they gave you a choice, if you wanted to continue to use PSN then you'll had to give up OtherOS, and that's well within the agreement that you agreed to when you create a PSN account. Granted, it's a dickish way to go about it, but it's well within the context of the agreement. You could have just said no and continue to enjoy OtherOS, without PSN access. It's the double-edged sword of free connectivity.

I think certain games force you to update, IE. they have an update already on the disc if you haven't updated. I'm not sure, but that's how Xbox does it.

Are you referring to the fake "tweet" claiming that 2.2 million CC numbers and CSC were stolen?

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9216308/Did_hackers_really_get_credit_card_numbers_from_Sony_?taxonomyId=18

And it's funny reading forums regarding this. People took that info and ran with it about someone selling the CC #'s..... and when they finally found out it may be a fact that sony didn't loose the CC #'s, (Although, they may have) people STILL blamed sony. Sony didn't steal your CC #!!!!! Does anti-viruses fail? Yes, at times... when people find ways around them. So blame sony because someone found a way around their security? Hell, govbernmemt systems have been hacked, many other companies as well.... it's not they targets fault they were hacked.

The "hackers" (Which is obviously not who breached the PSN) as saying they are trying to sell the CC info for a whopping $100,000!!!!!. And also tried to sell them back to sony, who declined. (Although they say that never happened). Wait, over 2 million CC numbers... and they are willing to part for 100K? If you were able to steal just $1 from each CC, you would have 2.2 million dollars!. Hell, even if the average CC limit was $2,111 per card (which it is), in theory you have potential control of $4,644,200,000. Ya, 4.6 BILLION dollars.... and they are willing to sell that info for 100K? lol....

It's sad that people are this ignorant to believe this shit.

Sony's warning...

"Sony insisted in a blog post that the credit card data it stored was encrypted: "While all credit card information stored in our systems is encrypted and there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility.

If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained. Keep in mind, however, that your credit card security code (sometimes called a CVC or CSC number) has not been obtained because we never requested it from anyone who has joined the PlayStation Network or Qriocity, and is therefore not stored anywhere in our system."

T@D, in the underground on the interwebz, credit cards are sold are as little as 0.22 dollars each. Using CC's for real world purchasing doesn't really work out, mainly because they have to be delivered somewhere or you have to actually go to the store to use it, if that CC is stolen paranoia kicks in. I would have been happy with 1m Very Happy

from what i've read, sony was VERY lazy with their security.

the personal data like email, where you live, your name, username/password wasn't encrypted, but the transaction-related stuff was.
