New Theme (For Real) - November 25, 2011

First topic message reminder :

Not to long ago (Mar 16, 2011 to be exact) I posted a topic of a new theme coming, which got you all excited but only to be let down as it has been a while now since that new theme update.

Well guess what? A new theme IS coming. I am currently in the process of making it and it is taking a long time to do but it will be clean.

With this new theme we will be switching away from phpBB to punBB. Now don't get to excited we are still stuck with Forumotion but we will be changing this up a bit. The basic stuff will stay the same but the boards will be cleaner as I mentioned before. I've been working a lot on modifying the forums templates and have a vision that I hope I can complete.

Unlike this theme it will be a lot brighter

Now I wont revel any screenshots or anything because I want it to be a surprise (the look that is) but I will show you the color scheme I am using. If I can figure out how to add a theme switcher then it will be different colors.

By the way this is kind of why I said that if we created a fresh site with forums we can start fresh on there and link back here for archives although I understand that isn't the same as keeping the history in tact.

ah, so it's forumotion's fault, another "limitation" that fucks everything up. the way i see it, that's forumotion's way of trying to keep their customers loyal, rather unfairly.

Not really. They provide a free service and easy maintenance. I have never paid for our .org name, they have given that and emails to me free every year. They just won't release the Mysql. Realistically, they make money off of this site via ads, so it's understandable they don't want someone becoming established using their service, gain speed, then jump ship.

Ripping the site content is easy, and I have done it before. I can completely replicate this site under a .com with no problems (posts wise) but, user name and passwords are not possible to rip. Trust me, I have attempted it for years. To transfer that stuff you would need the mysql and there is no way to get it. And even if I was able to get it, I would never be able to decrypt it to work properly anyway.

Although I would love to have more control, the site it self is safer here. It is backed up daily off site, has an easy to use ACP, pretty decent customizable section(s), and support.....not to mention, it's free. And trust me, there are options that can be done here that we haven't even tapped into.

The upside being full control of "owning" the site completely is offset, to me, by first.... no one really having the time to maintain the site full time and even the complete knowledge of pbb or apache to even do it properly. I have worked with it quite a bit, and coding isn't all that easy and trouble shooting, even harder. Ya, we could implement a template....but what would be the difference of using this then?. No reason to add more work, time, and effort anymore since the site and name is already established.

I know a guy that had a Forumotion forum and transferred to a new one but the only way he would do it for us if he got the main admin account info which is sketchy.

It would be nice to become big and make some revenue off ads our self but this is unlikely. That being said you would be surprised at how much you can customize FM if you know JS.

well i personally have used forumotion enough to know the set-in limits to how much you can customize it, you can't really make seperate pages using HTML/etc , so you're basically restricted to a portal/forum that can be modified through pre-set values. i for one am teaching myself how to build a full site from scratch using my namepad account, i'm experienced in forum softwares such as SMF/PHPBB/Vbulletin and i'm actually trying to learn how to build a decent-looking site without having to create too many custom images, which i'm still terrible at, given i've got a copy of Photoshop CS5 that i can use.

Actually, you can alter code values on forumotion. You can use HTML as well. There is actually a lot of customization you can do here. We just have never really needed it. You can opt to use the preset values or make your own. I have seen a few sites that don't use a standard preset and are completely custom. Although I know you have used forumotion, it seems you haven't seen everything that's available. There will always be limits when you go through something like this, but having done the research.... This is one of if not the most customizable free site there is.

And you are able to add pages and HTML redirects as well. I honestly think there are a lot more options here then you know about.

How upset would you guys be if we vaulted the spam section? General and spam are basically the same thing and most of the stuff is usually in the wrong sections anyways.

Alright, I hate to do this again but I think we will move some of the categories around and clean up the forum a lot.

I don't like that the main category page is scrolling so long, plus we are part of one and don't need to have separate private sections for the games. Most games will be under one category.

Hoping I can get a JS navbar we can just drop down to the game you want to view.

You have to remember, the forum view as an admin is completely different for you then almost everyone else. You could end up moving a bunch of things an no one will notice.
