If any of you haven't been reading up on what's currently going on in the Playstation scene pertaining to the Playstation 3 console as of now, here's a few things to get you caught up to the basic level.

George Hotz was sued for bypassing the security in his own playstation 3 console that he paid for, and distributing the exploit on the internet. this, in time, kickstarted the ps3 hacking scene, with lawsuits, custom firmwares, jailbreak dongles, DMCA takedowns, and bans everywhere.

as of a few days ago, a group, announcing themselves as "Anonymous" has taken down
Sony.com (now back online though unfortunately) and Playstation.com (still down as of a few hours ago)

i, to be honest, fully support what they're doing. Sony has done quite a few things to piss people off, i believe it's time they got a taste of the anger that we (the consumers) feel toward them for the unlawful removal of an advertised feature (OtherOS support), among other feature removals/security failures (the credit card leaks).

What's logical doesn't come into play in situations where you get the chance to "mod" pieces of hardware/software. Simply because it is an accomplishment.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that more than 99% of PS3 buyers have no interest in modding their PS3 for an achievement (meaning: cook their own mod), and having someone mod it puts liability on Sony's back because there's no way to control the 3rd party software and it even might be unnoticed malware, in which case, who is the customer going to blame? Sony of course. You simply can't blame for wanting to cover their asses.

Even if it wasn't malware, any number of things can go wrong and the result is the same.

It's similar to Apple bricking jailbreaked iPhones with software updates. You signed a contract that commited you to at&t and even if it is YOUR phone, they reserve the right to brick it if you breach it.

If everyone can remember, Sony were in the process of suing a company named “Zoomba” who were supposedly responsible for the original Jailbreak Dongle, well after 6 months of nothing. The Giant Crab has filed new papers to the court according to psx-scene.

Court papers wrote: SCEA is submitting its own statement since none of the defendants have appeared in this action.

The Court has entered a Preliminary Injunction. Since that time, counsel for SCEA has conducted extensive third party discovery and has been engaged in settlement discussions with certain of the defendants. Thus far, defendants Tom Nooker, individually and doing business as buyps3jailbreak and Thanh Nguyen, individually and doing business as USATechCity, Ltd. have entered into settlement agreements with

SCEA and have agreed to entry of consent judgments and permanent injunctions. SCEA will be filing those documents with the Court shortly. SCEA is currently awaiting responses from the other defendants regarding settlement.

IT IS FURTHER ORDERED AND ADJUDGED that in the event that Defendant violates this Judgment or assists others to do so, Defendant shall pay to SCEA $5,000 as liquidated damages per violation of this Judgment no later than forty-five (45) days from the date on which SCEA notifies Defendant of the violation. Such liquidated damages shall be an optional alternative to demonstrating actual damages. This optional alternative may be elected in SCEA’s sole discretion. Both liquidated damages and actual damages are supplemental to obtaining equitable relief to which SCEA may be entitled as a result of Defendant’s violation.

IT IS FURTHER ORDERED AND ADJUDGED that this Court shall retain jurisdiction for the purpose of making any further orders necessary or proper for the construction or modification of this Judgment or the Settlement Agreement and Release, the enforcement thereof, or the punishment of any violations thereof.

PSN has been down for 5 days so far as well due to an external intrusion. Sony is completely rebuilding PSN's infrastructure.

I wasn't saying anonymous was officially behind it... but it's obvious that someone in the same mid frame was.... another idiot that believes purchasing a PS3 gives you "rights" to hack it.

Anonymous is not a set group of people though. Theres not 10 or 50 people in it that are "members"... it's who ever joins the group and uses the name. If the person or people that did the latest attack were not using the name anonymous , you can be assured it's still part of the same ignorant cesspool that started this whole thing to begin with.

Funny if you look at things like a normal person.... If no one hacked the PS3, everyone would be playing as normal at this very second. The instigation of this entire thing was people breaching the contract they made with Sony.... and now are bitching about it. They created all of the changes, downtime, and problems. They are to blame, not Sony. Sony would nave never changed 1 thing, no OS removals, no blocks, no down time due to hacking. Sony wanted their system to stay the same way they created it, these asshat hacker fruits are the ones who are screwing with everyones experience.

"Anonymous says" doesn't work. They are not an organized group, it's a bunch of retards in a forum that hosts child pornography "for the lulz" anonymously and each makes whatever they want. I'm willing to bet most of the stupid shit that happens around the internet is somehow related to them. It's not just the forum, it's the mentality that some people, even without ever having heard of 4chan, take upon when given the perceived anonymity of the internet.

@porn, good point though, it is pretty obvious they're massively disorganized NOW, but when the original statements/attack started, it wasn't as clear.

@T@D, sony did release an official statement on the OtherOS removal, they stated it was "financial issues" that lead to the decision to disable OtherOS. which given the events that occurred before AND after the event, was a completely obvious lie.

sorry for double post, but i left out information before i clicked send.

the ps3 exploitation wasn't even a twinkle in the eyes of developers when OtherOS was disabled. it was the removal of OtherOS that sparked most of the best developers to work hard and crack the ps3 wide open.

Well, lets look at the financial portion of Sony.

It's a well known fact that most, if not all, console companies actually sell their product at a loss. If I'm not mistaken, Sony lost about $100 per PS2 they sold. The money was made up by game sales. So, hack a console, pirate games.... well... I assume you can see what happens there.

Above that, the PS3 has been out for years. Sales are bound to decline as do any tech product. Especially with rumors of new consoles in the making. You can't expect a company, exploited by hackers on top of dwindling sales, to continue to support a product that is going to end up costing them money.

Thats what the hackers fail to look at. They hack a console, no one cares. They distribute that hack and others get on board, the company starts to lose money, projects/support is axed,........ less games and support.

Time/sales can be to blame as well as exploits. As far as that being a lie, I doubt it. I'm sure Sony has had some "help" in their financial losses.

Same thing I said before....

How many people bought a PS3 for the fact of having multiple OS on it? It's an entertainment system built around gaming. No one "lost" the ability to enjoy the console..It still functions. And, you are talking about their reasonings from what you "believe". It is just as possible you are right as it is that Sony found out the exploits and tried to close that gap before it got to this point...

no you need not. lmao. but as i keep saying, quite a few people actually DID buy their ps3 mainly for the OtherOS feature, so they could run linux-based software on it. you could look that up on google if you really want to know more, i cbf right now.

on this Anonymous vs sony matter, from here i take a neutral standpoint. i am neither for or against Anon's actions. why? because i'd rather keep up with "real" news.

the fact that one of the lawsuits against sony for removal of OtherOS judged in favor of the Petitioner for a 100 euro reward indicates some slight progress though still.

I did read, and I never said the "external intrustion" was a DDoS attack. I said "All they typically do is a DDoS attack anyway. Anyone with a computer can do that. They impress no one." I was talking about Anon in the paragraph above and below that. It had nothing to do with the current problems with the PSN.

Lol, It's not like you are really going to find SQL leaks to inject into within a massive company like PS, DDoS is the only way to do anything, this is obviously happening on such a large scale. The fact they have kept the DDoS attacks going for so long is actually quite impressive, usually it won't last more than 5 mins because all of the shells get blocked. So either A: there's a shit ton of ip's ddossing or B: they just can't be bothered to block lol.

If he / his team claims no involvement then it's obviously just people that follow him/them using the name like a religion / god. Here's a good example for you T@D; Jesus Christ. Lol.

merky, anonymous did cease the DDoS attacks, but somebody hacked into PSN. which made sony want to fix their security. the 6 days psn has been down so far, not the result of DDoS, sony took the system offline so they could rebuild their security and make sure that it would be safer. there's a possibility of personal information being stolen from PSN, fortunately for me i've never used an actual credit card or anything with psn, only those prepaid psn cards you buy at stores.

Why do you continually try and demonize Sony? Have they made mistakes? Every company has.... but It's obvious the last problem was due to someone hacking into their infrastructure.
